Apple Unveils M2 Chip, Redesigned MacBook Air, and Software Upgrades

Apple has kicked off its World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2022 today, showcasing a blend of hardware and software advancements. While the keynote didn't unveil a plethora of new gadgets, the few announced are set to enhance the experience for many MacBook users. Additionally, improvements to Apple's operating systems were also highlighted, bringing a smile to those eagerly awaiting updates.
Let's dive into what Apple has in store for us.
iOS
In iOS 16, Apple has revamped the lock screen with several exciting features:
- New color filters
- Multiple customizable lock screens
- Editable typefaces for time displays
- Addable widgets like calendar and weather
- Fresh wallpapers
- Notifications now appear at the bottom, avoiding clutter on the lock screen
- Focus mode links with the lock screen to filter notifications based on selected modes
iMessage has also seen enhancements, allowing users to:
- Edit messages after sending
- Recall sent messages
- Mark messages as unread for later responses
New dictation features include:
- Interchangeable speech and typing
- AI-generated automatic punctuation
- Voice corrections for text
- Live text capabilities in videos
- A new camera view that translates text in images
One impressive feature demonstrated during the keynote was the ability to "grab" items from photos and share them in apps like iMessage.
Apple Wallet has expanded its capabilities. Currently, digital driver's licenses are accepted in just two states, with more states in the pipeline. In iOS 16, users can also store and share:
- Hotel room keys
- Order tracking, starting with Shopify
- Secure contactless payments via Apple Pay
- A new feature called Apple Pay Later, allowing payment splitting over four weeks at no interest
Apple Maps is introducing valuable new features:
- Expansion to 11 additional countries and regions
- Multi-stop routing for up to 15 stops
- Transit costs and in-app payment options for transit card refills
- High-resolution ground-level views, useful for real estate searches
Sports updates include:
- Displaying scores and play-by-play information on the lock screen
- A new My Sports section in Apple News for scores and highlights, syncing with Apple TV
Family Sharing is enhanced with:
- New controls for settings
- A family checklist for shared settings updates
- An iCloud Shared Photo Library for authorized members to view and contribute
- The camera app's ability to send photos directly to the shared library
Privacy improvements feature:
- A new Safety Check tool to help individuals manage data sharing in sensitive situations, allowing control over text message access and device sign-outs
CarPlay will also gain additional functionality:
- Compatibility with larger screens
- Integration with vehicle hardware for instrument cluster control
- Customizable display options
WatchOS 9
WatchOS is set to receive several new features:

Apple Silicon M2 Chip
The highly anticipated M2 chip has been officially announced, featuring:
- 50% more bandwidth than the M1
- Support for up to 24GB of memory
- An 8-core CPU
- Up to a 10-core GPU
- A new neural engine capable of 15.8 trillion operations per second
MacBook Air
The MacBook Air is receiving a redesign, moving away from its iconic tapered shape to a flatter profile akin to the new MacBook Pros, yet remaining slim at 0.44 inches and weighing just 2.7 pounds. Notably, it will be the first device to feature the M2 chip.
Key specifications include:
- M2 chip
- Up to 24 GB of unified memory
- Up to 2 TB of storage
- New color options: midnight, space gray, starlight, and silver
- MagSafe charging, freeing up one USB-C/Thunderbolt port
- A 13.6-inch Liquid Retina Display with improved brightness
- A new 1080p camera
- Integrated speakers and microphone
- A 4-speaker sound system with spatial audio
- A fanless design
- Up to 18 hours of battery life
- Support for fast charging with the right power brick
The M1 MacBook Air will continue to be available at its starting price of $999.
MacBook Pro
The 13-inch MacBook Pro will also be upgraded with the M2 chip, maintaining much of the existing design. Specifications include:
- M2 chip
- 8-core CPU
- 10-core GPU
- Maximum of 24 GB of unified memory
- Up to 2 TB of storage
- Active cooling for maximum CPU performance
- Up to 20 hours of battery life
- Starting price of $1,299 for the 8 GB of unified memory and 256 GB storage model
macOS
Apple has introduced macOS Ventura as the successor to Monterey, set to launch this fall, featuring various productivity enhancements:
- A new Stage Manager feature organizes open apps on the left side while keeping the focused app centered
- Enhanced Spotlight allows easier image searches and even text recognition within images
- Mail improvements include undo send, scheduled sending, and reminders
- Safari will feature shared tab groups for collaboration
- Introduction of Passkeys for passwordless authentication
- Improved Continuity features, enabling seamless transitions between devices for calls and camera use
- Desk View, utilizing the iPhone's Ultra Wide camera for dual views during calls
iPadOS
iPadOS 16 has been unveiled, bringing sought-after productivity features:
- Integration of many new functionalities from macOS Ventura and iOS
- Real-time collaboration on documents like Pages, Numbers, and Keynote
- Messaging capabilities within collaborative apps
- FreeForm, a new collaborative whiteboard app
- Stage Manager will allow multiple apps to run simultaneously, with a full-screen desktop option when connected to external monitors
