Art as Medicine: Discovering Healing Through Creative Expression

Chapter 1: The Healing Power of Art
When faced with challenges, I turn to art as a form of expression. Creativity acts as a vital outlet for me to process my emotions, confront trauma, and navigate life's hurdles.
Throughout my childhood, I endured significant harm due to my father's unresolved pain, which he projected onto those around him. My mother also contributed to this cycle of hurt, despite her efforts to be supportive. As a result, I dedicated many years to healing from the enduring effects of emotional, mental, and physical abuse. I engaged in therapy, practiced yoga, explored various diets, attended retreats, read books, and even studied Psychotherapy at university. While each of these methods had its merits, it was my artistic endeavors that truly enabled me to mend my heart repeatedly through life's inevitable challenges. The healing power of creativity and self-expression is often underestimated. History is filled with artists, writers, and thinkers who have noted the detrimental effects of stifled creativity on the human spirit. I wholeheartedly concur; we are inherently designed to create, feel, express, and grow. Art is our remedy!
The day I stepped into my local community center to observe a group of individuals painting, something transformative occurred within me. Encouraged to participate, I began applying paint to a blank canvas, and I experienced a unique blend of fear and joy. Although I had no painting skills, the freedom to express myself without fear of judgment—something I later recognized as essential for genuine creativity—was invaluable. Writing evokes similar feelings of liberation, allowing me to delve into parts of myself that have often remained unexplored. It enables me to breathe deeply and connect with my ever-evolving identity.
In my journey, I have always sought love and connection with another person who could embrace the depth of my being. However, no one has been able to fill that role as profoundly as my creative pursuits. It is within the realm of creativity that I truly feel held. When I engage in art or writing with dedication and without expectations—simply honoring the expressions flowing through me—I experience a profound sense of belonging. This realization has led me to view creativity as a muscle; the more we use it, the more robust it becomes.
Creating joy through art has become an essential part of my existence. Neglecting my creative practice leads to feelings of misery and disconnection from my essence. I recognize creativity as a natural force; when we stop resisting it with self-imposed limitations, it flows effortlessly. Being blocked in our creativity is contrary to our nature. This is why it is crucial to commit to our artistic endeavors, particularly in a world that often feels sanitized and disconnected. Our work frequently involves prolonged periods in front of screens, and our food is often processed and fast. We no longer rely on our creativity to hunt for sustenance and instead find ourselves drifting away from our primal instincts. By committing to our creativity, we awaken a natural desire for exploration, seeking new ideas and endless inspiration. I wake up each day excited about what I will create and write next, which instills a sense of purpose and opens my mind to limitless possibilities. It allows me to nurture my childlike wonder and enthusiasm for life, regardless of the challenges I face.
Getting Started with Creativity
Step 1 — Commitment! I ensure that creativity becomes an integral part of my daily routine. I dedicate a special space for my art and writing, making it inviting and free from excuses. Regardless of my mood, I engage with my creativity as a means of feeling and healing. Accept that if you are new to tapping into your creativity, you might not know what to expect. Patience is key; keep showing up.
Step 2 — I harness my willpower by setting small challenges for myself. When I began painting, I undertook a 100-day challenge, where I expressed my feelings through random shapes and colors. This practice fostered a sense of loving discipline that is essential for cultivating and strengthening my creative muscle.
Step 3 — I allow myself to explore authentically, refraining from self-censorship. Even when I encounter creative blocks, I focus on discovering small moments of freedom within that space. I no longer question my thoughts, feelings, or ideas but rather embrace the journey of exploration, failure, learning, and discovery.
