Boost Your Reading: 5 Effective Strategies to Read More Books

Written on

Chapter 1: Embracing the Reading Habit

Reading has become an integral part of my daily routine—something I engage in without fail. I can't imagine a day passing without diving into a book! Last year, I accomplished the remarkable feat of reading 61 books, the highest number I've ever achieved in one year. Yet, this wasn't always the case. A few years back, I set a modest goal of reading just three books for the year and failed miserably!

So, what changed? How did I significantly increase my reading volume? Continue reading to discover my five practical approaches that enabled me to read over 52 books in a single year.

Section 1.1: Accessibility is Key

Reading is one of the most accessible hobbies available. You can indulge in a good book virtually anywhere, which is why I always carry one with me. Whether I'm on my lunch break, commuting, or even waiting in line for coffee, I seize every opportunity to read. I've even found myself reading at the gym! Initially, it felt odd to read in such unusual places, but those small reading sessions accumulate over time.

Just having a book within reach doesn't guarantee I'll read it, but the likelihood of picking it up increases significantly when it's readily available.

Section 1.2: Ditching Screen Time for Pages

One of the most common excuses for not reading is, "I don't have enough time." If you're in this camp, you might want to reconsider, as the data suggests otherwise! Recent research from Data Reportal reveals that individuals aged 16 to 64 spend an average of 6 hours and 37 minutes per day on screens.

I often find myself aimlessly scrolling through social media instead of using that time wisely. This is why I frequently take breaks from platforms like Instagram. During these breaks, my screen time decreases, my mind feels clearer, and I manage to read far more.

The first video, "How to Read One Book a Week (5 Tips for Busy People)," offers valuable strategies for incorporating reading into a busy lifestyle.

Section 1.3: Structuring Your Reading Time

Being a creature of habit, I thrive on routine, and without a set reading schedule, I struggle to make the most of my limited time. My personal reading plan typically includes:

  • Listening to an audiobook during my commute
  • Reading during breakfast
  • Reading on my lunch break
  • Enjoying a book before bedtime

While I may not have long stretches to read, I consistently manage to carve out at least an hour each day. Though an hour may not seem like much, it adds up to a substantial amount over the course of a year.

Chapter 2: Making Reading Enjoyable

Reading is an essential practice that everyone should engage in, but it’s crucial to make it enjoyable to ensure consistency.

Section 2.1: Transforming Reading into a Pleasure

Here are a few ways I keep reading enjoyable:

  • Choose books you love
  • Set reading goals
  • Track your reading progress
  • Write brief reviews
  • Explore different genres
  • Share your reads with friends
  • Maintain a list of books to read next

Reading should never feel like an obligation; it should be a delightful experience. The moment it begins to feel like a chore is when you risk losing interest in reading altogether.

The second video, "How I Read 1 Book Per Week - 5 Tips to Read 10x More (Seriously)," provides insights on maximizing your reading potential.

Section 2.2: Juggling Multiple Reads

Sometimes, I find myself uninterested in a particular book. There’s little worse than struggling to push through a book you’re not enjoying! By reading multiple books simultaneously, I can switch between them based on my mood. Typically, I juggle three books at once: one non-fiction, one fiction, and one audiobook.

Initially, I was hesitant about reading several books concurrently, fearing I would lose interest in them. However, the opposite has proven true; this approach has enhanced my enjoyment of reading.

Happy reading!

See you next time,

Yours sincerely,

Tom
