The Common Lifestyle Choices of Highly Successful Individuals

Written on

Achieving wealth is a common aspiration, often explored through countless online resources. The phrase “How to get rich” yields approximately 1.34 billion results on Google, indicating the widespread interest in this topic.

While it's widely recognized that accumulating wealth requires time and astute decision-making across various life aspects, insights from an individual who has interviewed numerous self-made millionaires reveal that wealth generation also hinges on specific lifestyle habits.

Tom Corley, a financial planner and accountant, conducted interviews with 233 affluent individuals, primarily self-made millionaires, analyzing their daily routines. He compared their habits with those of 128 individuals earning below $35,000 annually.

In his acclaimed book, “Change Your Habits, Change Your Life,” Corley highlights that wealthy individuals adopt particular practices that position them for success. Below are 10 lifestyle habits that have been instrumental in the achievements of many millionaires.

1. They rise early in the morning.

Corley's study found that 50% of self-made millionaires wake up at least three hours before their workday starts. This time is often used for personal projects, planning, or exercising.

“Waking up at five to focus on your top three priorities allows you to take control of your life,” Corley states, emphasizing the confidence that comes from this routine.

However, this isn't universal...

Alexis Ohanian, co-founder of Reddit and husband of Serena Williams, wakes up at 10 a.m. but limits screen time in his bedroom, stating, “I used to wake up with my laptop.”

2. They are avid readers.

Corley’s survey revealed that 88% of wealthy respondents dedicate at least 30 minutes daily to reading for self-education and improvement. They favor biographies, history, and self-help literature over entertainment.

Reading about the journeys of other successful individuals can serve as a powerful motivational tool. “Biographies from those who rose from poverty to wealth offer valuable lessons,” he notes.

Even Warren Buffett, the legendary investor, cites reading as his most valuable habit.

But not everyone shares this view...

Kanye West, co-author of “Thank You and You’re Welcome,” admits he generally avoids books, preferring to gain knowledge through direct experiences.

3. They allocate time for reflection.

Many self-made millionaires take 15 to 30 minutes daily to think about their lives. Corley observes that “The wealthy tend to think in solitude, particularly in the mornings.”

This reflective time often involves assessing their career, health, and relationships, contributing to stress reduction.

Yet, this habit isn’t consistent...

George Foreman, the heavyweight champion, struggled with finances after his boxing career waned, suggesting he may not have prioritized reflective thinking.

4. They prioritize physical fitness.

Regular exercise is associated with mental clarity and increased motivation. According to Corley, 76% of those surveyed engage in at least 30 minutes of aerobic activity daily.

For instance, billionaire Richard Branson claims his 5 a.m. tennis or biking sessions have significantly boosted his productivity.

However, not all adhere to this principle...

Angelina Jolie enjoys physical activities but doesn’t consistently dedicate time to exercise.

5. They surround themselves with inspiring individuals.

Corley states, “You become as successful as those you frequently associate with.” If you lack a network of motivated individuals, consider volunteering or joining groups that align with your interests.

Successful individuals are careful to minimize their exposure to negativity, as Corley explains.

But there are exceptions...

Syd Barrett, the creative force behind Pink Floyd, distanced himself from the industry at a young age and lived a reclusive life.

6. They chase their own ambitions.

Corley finds that most self-made millionaires are focused on their goals, both short-term and long-term.

“Avoid leaning your ladder against someone else's wall; find your own dreams,” advises Corley.

Yet, exceptions exist...

Chris Clark, who gained fame for selling the domain pizza.com for $2.6 million, showcases how unexpected avenues can lead to success.

7. They prioritize quality sleep.

Many successful individuals, including Albert Einstein, reportedly valued sleep highly. An impressive 89% of self-made millionaires rest for seven to eight hours nightly.

“Sleep is crucial for success,” he mentions, underscoring its importance for memory and creativity.

But this isn’t universally practiced...

Silvio Berlusconi, a prominent Italian political figure, famously functions on just two to three hours of sleep.

8. They cultivate multiple income streams.

Corley emphasizes that self-made millionaires typically do not rely on a single income source, often developing several streams before reaching their first million.

“Diversifying your income can help you withstand economic downturns,” he notes.

In this case, it seems consistent...

9. They avoid squandering time.

Time is a critical resource for the wealthy. Corley urges individuals to be selective about how they spend their time, cautioning against mindless hours on social media.

“Recognizing time as a major risk compels you to be deliberate in its use,” he asserts.

But exceptions can be found...

While specific examples may not be identified, many celebrities enjoy the fruits of their labor in leisure.

10. They contribute to charitable causes.

Forbes ranks philanthropists based on how effectively their donations reach those in need. Chuck Feeney leads this list, having given away nearly all his fortune in his quest to “die broke.”

Here are the top five philanthropists:

1. Warren Buffett Buffett has donated $14.7 billion (16.3% of his wealth) mainly for health and poverty alleviation.

2. Bill & Melinda Gates The Gates Foundation has given away $9.9 billion (9% of their wealth) towards economic development and education.

3. George Soros Soros has contributed 37.4% of his wealth—totaling $3.1 billion—promoting human rights through his foundations.

4. Michael Bloomberg Bloomberg has donated $3 billion (5% of his wealth) to public health, gun control, and climate change efforts.

5. Walton Family The Walton Family Foundation has spent $2.3 billion (1.3% of their wealth) on educational initiatives.

It’s admirable to see these affluent individuals using their wealth to make a positive impact.

While not every successful person shares the same story, they have all achieved remarkable success.

I hope exploring these lifestyle habits inspires you to incorporate them into your own life.
