Discovering Influential Writers: An Interview with Waleed Mahmud Tariq

Written on

Dear Readers and Friends of Medium,

Engaging in writing and curating content has allowed me to connect with authentic and impactful writers and leaders from various nations and cultures. One of my favorite activities is introducing these talented individuals to my audience. Since 2019, I have been conducting interviews with writers on Medium.

In the past, during my postdoctoral research on leadership in large organizations and startups, I had the privilege of interviewing many senior leaders and entrepreneurs. Through these conversations, I uncovered valuable insights into their learning processes, which I have shared with the younger generation as a resource for growth and development. Each interview provided a unique opportunity to connect with another kindred spirit.

Last year, as I became a Friend of Medium, early participants in this program expressed a desire for curated content that would enhance the visibility of influential writers capable of educating, inspiring, and entertaining them. To meet this demand, I have continued to showcase writers I admire and respect, relishing the chance to publish and curate their significant and relatable stories.

Regrettably, as I noted in a previous piece titled Why Does Medium Block My Interviews for Influential Writers, Medium does not curate interview stories. As a result, these pieces are not widely disseminated and only reach readers through the direct links I provide to my subscribers.

Nevertheless, this limitation has not hindered my progress. I now share these interviews on Substack, where I can connect with thousands of readers through their email lists, Substack's advanced, non-censoring algorithms, and the impressive social media tool, Notes.

From a young age, I learned that when one door closes, another opens. I remain optimistic and appreciative of my blessings, which drives me to continue conducting interviews outside of Medium. I also express my gratitude to the platform for the serendipitous encounters it has facilitated over the past five years, although it is unfortunate that Medium readers miss out on discovering these remarkable writers due to algorithmic constraints.

As I cultivated a large community on Medium, my next goal is to establish an equally substantial, if not larger, community on Substack, bridging the two platforms to provide diverse opportunities for writers and readers alike. I view these platforms not as competitors, but as collaborators.

My strategy focuses on creating a connection between these platforms, empowering writers through mentorship and supporting them in audience building via guidance, collaboration, cross-pollination, and community backing. I elaborated on this strategy in a story titled Leading the Way and Empowering Writers for a Bright Future.

The objective of this approach is to foster a vibrant, interconnected network of writers across both platforms, empowering a new community through a publication developed by our editors and curators.

Here’s an overview of an altruistic organization with a commercial aspect that I am building, supported by brilliant minds and compassionate individuals. Everyone—writers and readers alike—are welcome to join our community, as the more, the merrier.

Introducing Waleed Mahmud Tariq

In this article, I will share the transcript of my interview with Waleed Mahmud Tariq, whose insights I have been following for some time. Although he is relatively new to Medium, he is not new to writing. His exceptional communication, interpersonal, multicultural, and leadership skills speak for themselves.

Waleed contributes to my publications as an accomplished author, sharing his insightful and motivating stories. He also aids our community as a volunteer consulting and publishing editor, helping beginners improve their writing and discover their unique voices. Waleed has authored multiple engaging and thought-provoking books.

We are connected via social media and collaborate on Slack. He is also a member of the ILLUMINATION Community on Substack, generously supporting our mission to create a more extensive, robust, and sustainable community globally.

Waleed, could you tell us a bit about your background?

Thank you for this opportunity. I was born in Peshawar, Pakistan, into a conservative environment and a rather uninspiring region. My passion for learning has always been profound; I was reading college-level texts while still in middle school.

Despite my academic success, the scarcity of knowledge in my area posed challenges. The culture of rote learning and a lack of opportunities stifled my early passions.

In my early teens, I faced a significant existential crisis that led to debilitating depression. After years of therapy and self-help, I emerged as a more complete person, developing a deep love for knowledge and philosophy that ultimately shaped my writing career. This experience drives me to focus on philosophy and mental health in my writings, as both subjects are deeply meaningful to me.

After obtaining my accounting and finance degree, I joined the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, UK (ACCA), allowing me to break free from the traditional educational system in Pakistan. However, despite excelling in ACCA, it directed me toward a career path that did not align with my interests.

Professionally, I am a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (FCCA) and have been working as a finance professional for over a decade. I currently work for the Royal Office in Dubai, where I continue to explore and write about moral, political, and existential philosophy.

Throughout this journey, my passion for writing remained strong. I contributed to various publications on financial topics for platforms like Seeking Alpha, documenting everything I learned about philosophy, physics, psychology, chemistry, and more.

Fast forward to 2023; I compiled my previous writings into structured books and embarked on my journey as a full-time author. After publishing several books, I decided to focus on philosophical and mental health themes.

Now, I write books and articles consistently, including my ventures on Medium. By the end of 2024, I aspire to transition entirely into a full-time writing career dedicated to sharing my voice with the world.

What hobbies do you have?

I am an avid reader, often immersed in books across various subjects. This passion for learning has remained a constant throughout my life, regardless of circumstances. In addition to reading, I write extensively, both professionally and as a personal outlet. I also enjoy painting as a creative expression. Driving while listening to instrumental music inspires reflection and creativity.

What are the top three books that have impacted your life?

The first book, The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle, marked the beginning of my journey towards inner peace during my battle with depression. Its insights on mindfulness and living in the present moment were foundational to improving my mental health and personal development.

Secondly, The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown captivated me as a teenager with its emphasis on history, art, and mystery, introducing me to the Renaissance's architects. This book inspired my pursuit of interdisciplinary learning and appreciation for the interconnectedness of knowledge.

Lastly, The Dante Club by Matthew Pearl introduced me to Dante Alighieri and La Divina Comedia, deeply moving me with its literary and poetic richness. It pulled me into the realm of literature and writing, shaping my admiration for the power of words and storytelling.

Could you share information about the books you have authored and your future writing plans?

My first book, Probing Freewill, emerged from the existential crisis of my teenage years, beginning with a single question: “Who am I?” It explores whether we are the authors of our lives or merely puppets of destiny.

As I progressed, I aimed to create a comprehensive discourse on philosophy, realizing many people were unfamiliar with fundamental philosophical concepts due to their perceived obsolescence. Thus, I wrote Power and Ethics, highlighting the Western philosophical timeline from Ancient Greece to modern times, making it relevant today—for instance, incorporating Socrates into discussions on climate change and political polarization.

As I delved deeper into philosophical discourse, I recognized I had two paths: to specialize in specific philosophical aspects or to address practical realities, showcasing philosophy’s relevance in contemporary governance. Consequently, my book Decrypting Globalization examines modern afflictions and proposes practical solutions to issues like migration, nationalism, and environmental policies.

Next, I explored solutions for contemporary challenges, concluding that education is a realistic answer. I wrote This is Not Education to emphasize the glaring problems within our education systems, which I have experienced firsthand, advocating for genuine education that fosters creativity and critical thinking over rote learning.

My forthcoming release, Undepressed, is a deeply personal exploration of mental health, rooted in my struggles with depression and societal stigmas. Through this book, I aim to illuminate the raw realities of mental health challenges and advocate for a more compassionate approach to well-being.

Why do you write on Medium?

Although I have been writing for a decade, I previously lacked a platform to amplify my voice. After compiling my work into a book, I recognized the importance of participating in global discourses, and Medium provided that outlet.

My writings often reflect themes of social critique and advocacy for pressing issues such as mental health. These topics have always been close to my heart, and Medium allows me to voice them.

In summary, I write on Medium to reinforce my commitment to establishing myself as a writer and to share my perspectives with an audience eager to listen.

What values guide you as a writer?

As a writer, my core values encompass authenticity, intellectual integrity, and a steadfast pursuit of truth. I believe in writing with honesty and clarity, rooted in philosophical inquiry that challenges societal norms and encourages readers to question the status quo. Empathy is crucial to me, as I strive to connect with my readers on a personal level. Additionally, I am dedicated to advocating for mental health awareness and social justice, using my platform to highlight critical issues and foster meaningful discussions.

How do you connect with your readers?

Years of cultivating my capacity for objective learning and understanding have taught me that effective communication begins with empathy and grasping the reader’s perspective. However, it wasn't until I applied these principles in my writing that I truly connected with my audience.

Why did you join ILLUMINATION, and how has your experience been?

Upon joining Medium, I was initially unaware of how publications functioned. Once I learned about ILLUMINATION, I was struck by its alignment with my values. The sheer number of writers supported by ILLUMINATION is impressive.

My first thought was, “How do you manage this?” As I explored ILLUMINATION's support for writers, I found it remarkable and felt compelled to contribute to the community's efforts.

The second reason is the sense of community. It may sound cliché, but anyone who has interacted with the editorial team knows how responsive, supportive, and helpful they are. Access to professionals who offer guidance is invaluable. Their commitment to assisting writers is commendable, and they are genuinely wonderful people.

This interview exemplifies that. It's not about views or reads; it's about someone established taking time to help another writer gain exposure. There’s no ulterior motive, just self-fulfillment and kindness. These reasons would inspire anyone to engage with such a community.

What are five unique stories you’d like to share with your audience and why?

While I wish for all my stories to be heard, here are five I would particularly like to highlight:

> The Depths of Depression: This was my first public acknowledgment of my depression, igniting my desire to combat the stigma surrounding mental health. It motivated me to compile my reflections during that time and share my experiences to help others break the silence.

> The Power of Gratitude: I published this piece following the previous one. Despite its novice craftsmanship, its message saved my life, and I hope it can do the same for someone else.

> Why is Everyone so Emotional about the Environment?: This piece holds significance as it marks the moment I began finding my voice publicly. You can truly see the evolution in my writing before and after this article.

> Chained in Tradition: Reflecting on my roots in a disadvantaged third-world country, this story contrasts sharply with the rest of the world, prompting me to delve deeper into these themes.

What are the key success factors for you as a writer on Medium?

For me, success on Medium is built on several fundamental elements: authenticity, consistency, and engagement. Authentic writing allows me to genuinely connect with readers, establishing trust and fostering a loyal audience.

Consistency keeps me visible and relevant in the ever-changing landscape of online content. Regularly publishing high-quality pieces maintains audience engagement and attracts new readers.

Lastly, actively engaging with my readers through comments and social media fosters a sense of community around my work, transforming casual readers into dedicated followers.

What advice do you have for new writers in ILLUMINATION?

Write with authenticity and impact. I am a staunch advocate for freedom of expression and believe that if you have something to say, there are people eager to listen. Authentic and impactful writing, when done consistently, will eventually be heard.

What are your plans as a writer?

I aim to transition from my role as a finance professional to that of a full-time author. Since beginning my writing journey, I have experienced a remarkable sense of peace and freedom, which I value above all else. Writing has liberated me, and I intend to embrace this freedom for the rest of my life. My guiding principle is that anything jeopardizing my mental peace is too costly to afford. Writing has provided me with that peace, making it worth every effort.

How can readers and writers connect with you?

You can find my book profiles on Goodreads and Amazon. I am active on social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram. Additionally, I can be reached through Slack under the same name.
