Chapter 1: The Shift Towards a Holistic Mindset
It's time to adopt a fresh perspective on mindset—one that takes into account the entirety of your being. This holistic approach recognizes the body as a vital navigation system in your journey towards the life you envision.
Traditionally, the concept of mindset has been tied to relentless action, decision-making, and a tendency to overlook the body's signals. This can lead to extremes of toxic positivity and negativity, often ignoring the intricacies of our nervous system. As Chris Bowness aptly puts it, “Only living in your mind is like knowing your body is a temple but never leaving the attic.”
For over a decade, I have been guiding individuals to explore mindset in a more comprehensive manner—one that incorporates the heart, mind, body, soul, and spirit into aligned decision-making. Too often, there's a conflict between the heart and mind, with advice that encourages detachment from bodily sensations and emotions.
To me, making decisions is a full-body experience. Our bodies serve as quantum navigation systems, allowing us to align our choices with our true selves. Scientific advancements in muscle testing and the heart-brain connection underscore the significance of holistic decision-making. Studies show that our gut also plays an essential role in this process, emphasizing the need for a body-inclusive approach.
A holistic mindset encompasses thoughts, feelings, sensory experiences, visualizations, intuition, and your inner landscape, guiding you toward the life you wish to create.
“How often do you consider the well-being of your future self?” This transition to a holistic mindset requires a significant shift in perspective, moving from a fragmented approach to a fully embodied one. It's not simply a matter of strategies or steps; it demands experiential understanding.
An intuitive way to engage with this shift is through reflective questions. One of my favorite prompts, which I often share with clients, is: What one action can I take today that my future self will appreciate? This question has the power to fundamentally alter how you approach your day and shape your desired future. It can help combat procrastination, alleviate anxiety, and dispel feelings of being stuck.
I often incorporate various questions and prompts into my morning routine, but this particular one resonates deeply with me. It helps me connect with my vision, making it the focal point of my goals. As Chris Bowness says, “My vision is my goal.”
By waking up and embodying this question, you can create a mindset shift that prepares you for the day ahead. It’s a thought you can revisit throughout your daily activities.
Have you ever gone through an entire day burdened by the need to put fresh sheets on your bed, only to feel immense relief upon realizing you did it earlier? Or perhaps you woke up thinking about a pile of dishes, only to remember you tackled them the night before? These moments illustrate what it means to care for your future self, but you can take this a step further.
You can proactively ask yourself how to enhance your work, health, or self-care. This realization of the power of mindset transformation spurred my excitement about what I could accomplish—not just today, but over the coming weeks and months.
When you pose this question, the answers can shift dramatically from moment to moment. It could involve resting, going for a walk, jotting down ideas, or creating promotional materials. This practice has generated substantial momentum in my life, aligning with the visions I hold and the life I aspire to create.
I encourage you to try this approach: do your future self a favor by asking what you can do in this moment that they will appreciate. I would love to hear about the changes you experience through this mindset shift.
