A journey begins

"You're going to lose your head, and they’ll send it back to your family in a box." It’s hard to believe she actually said that. How could kidnappers in a foreign country even find my address? I chuckled and replied, "You watch too many movies." Why would anyone say such a thing to someone embarking on their first solo international trip? Despite my laughter, I felt a wave of nerves and anxiety wash over me. It wasn’t fear of danger that troubled me; rather, it was the magnitude of this leap into the unknown. My life had been so devoid of excitement that I had nearly forgotten what it meant to truly live. Since my divorce at the end of 2012, I had spent years reconstructing my life and learning valuable lessons about love and loss. By 2019, I felt I had made progress, yet a sense of something essential was still eluding me. Life felt too routine, almost trivial. Why wasn’t it more meaningful? I had lost my sense of adventure, confined within the limits of my everyday existence. My life revolved around my neighborhood and the nearby city, and my narrow perspective acted like chains. Like many, I had become self-centered. If something didn’t fit within my limited view, it simply didn’t exist. Past disappointments clouded my dreams, leaving me without aspirations. As a single dad, I often felt guilty for wanting more for myself. Society teaches us that prioritizing our own needs is selfish, especially with responsibilities toward others. But that notion is a myth. Once you see through this facade, it’s impossible to ignore. I learned that when you invest in yourself, you can give so much more to those around you. My life had become a monotonous cycle, akin to the movie "Groundhog Day." Each day felt like a repeat of the last: wake up, work, hit the gym, watch TV, and sleep, with meals sprinkled in. Weekends with my daughter were a welcome change, forcing me to step outside my comfort zone.
The Turning Point
One morning in April 2019, I realized I had reached my breaking point. I needed to make a change. My thoughts kept drifting to the idea of taking a trip. With family and friends scattered across the U.S., a quick visit seemed feasible. However, just visiting familiar places didn’t feel enough this time; I craved something transformative. My family is spread across the globe—maybe it was time to reconnect. But even that didn’t feel grand enough. A realization struck me: I had always dreamed of visiting Brazil, Peru, and Colombia, captivated by the rich cultures of Latin America. After some research, I found that flights to Colombia were surprisingly affordable. Colombia it was.
Breaking Free from Routine
We often hear how vital routines are, but we’re rarely warned about their potential to stifle our dreams. While some routines can be beneficial for self-improvement—like exercise or reading—many of us fall into a dull routine of waking, working, and watching TV. This repetitive cycle can trap us, and it’s easy to overlook until time has slipped away. One day, we wake up realizing we have little to show for our lives. The key to breaking free is to do something different. Self-help gurus suggest small changes like brushing your teeth with your opposite hand or altering your commute. These may provide temporary relief, but eventually, the nagging feeling of dissatisfaction returns. What is your inner voice trying to communicate? Taking that initial step towards change is often more daunting than we’d like to admit. Routines offer comfort; they’re safe and predictable. Yet, venturing into the unknown can be frightening. What if it goes poorly? What if it leads to disaster? Fear can keep us paralyzed. But only by taking risks can we discover what we’re truly capable of. Spoiler alert: merely changing your surroundings won’t miraculously make you happy. True fulfillment comes from action.
The Adventure Begins
As my plane touched down in Medellín, I felt a wave of relief. I was finally doing something meaningful with my life. The next nine days held unknown possibilities, but I knew I would return changed in some way. Perhaps my friends had a point; this trip could be reckless. Colombia’s reputation, shaped by media portrayals, didn’t do justice to the reality I was about to experience. The country is much like any large U.S. city, with both good and bad areas. I explored from Medellín to Cartagena, visiting major cities and smaller towns alike. I immersed myself in the culture and, most importantly, discovered more about myself. I learned to appreciate the vastness of the world and the potential it holds. Witnessing people from other backgrounds—living fulfilling lives with far less—hit me hard. It was a wake-up call, reminding me that true happiness is often found outside one’s comfort zone. This trip was not my first international experience, but it was my first in over twenty years. Back then, I didn’t appreciate the world’s vastness or the endless opportunities it offers. If something ignites your passion, pursue it. That’s where the magic of life begins.
A Life Transformed
Returning home from Colombia, I vowed not to slip back into my old, mundane existence. I began planning future trips, even as 2020 approached. We all know the challenges that year brought, but I didn’t let it deter me. My next adventure led me to the Dominican Republic during the pandemic. Although negativity surrounded me, I pressed on, altering my life’s trajectory. This journey ultimately brought me to my wife, and we’ve enjoyed nearly three incredible years together. That spontaneous trip to Colombia fundamentally changed my life. Prior to this experience, I had no idea what I could accomplish. Many of us grapple with the concept of happiness, often unsure of its true nature. We’re conditioned to seek happiness through conventional means, rarely exploring alternatives. We wait for happiness to come to us. But I assure you, it won’t just appear. You must actively seek it, and that’s where adventure plays a crucial role. Adventure is personal; what feels significant to one person may not resonate with another. You don’t need to take extreme steps like traveling solo to a foreign country to spark change. The important thing is to do something—anything—that disrupts your routine and reveals your potential. Gaining confidence through new experiences empowers you to pursue more meaningful endeavors, leading to a life filled with adventure rather than mere existence.
