Empowering Single Moms: Breaking the Silence on Challenges

Chapter 1: The Reality of Single Mothers
In this discussion, I want to address a deeply personal topic that resonates with me as a single mother. It's become evident that single moms rank among the most financially vulnerable family units. Statistics reveal that in 2010, one in five mothers was single, with many of them possessing only a high school diploma. Research indicates that children of parents who pursue higher education tend to be more motivated academically.
Given these insights, why do we rarely explore ways to uplift these mothers and promote educational incentives for them?
When my son was just a newborn, I found myself facing an incredibly daunting challenge. I made the courageous decision to leave a dangerous situation to ensure our survival. The alternative was unthinkable—being a tragic headline about a mother and her child found lifeless. I was determined to shield my son at all costs.
However, I was unprepared for the hardships that lay ahead. Despite the challenges, every sleepless night and moment of struggle was worth it. I committed to furthering my education to secure a better future for my son, providing him with the stability and comfort he deserves.
The past few years have been a relentless journey of studying while navigating financial constraints. I initially enrolled in a Teacher Education program at the university but had to switch to online studies in social pedagogy after my first year. The high cost of living pushed me to seek opportunities that allowed me to be present in my son's life, rather than absent. By adopting better organizational skills, planning, and cultivating a positive mindset, I discovered solutions to balance work and family life. My son serves as my inspiration—my guiding light.
Chapter 2: The Balancing Act of Life
My daily routine often consists of working and studying for 17 to 19 hours while managing to find moments for play, chores, and attending to both my son’s and my own needs. Despite the overwhelming demands, I have never felt happier, and my son is thriving.
Currently, I juggle two jobs—one as a tutor for middle school students and the other as a social therapist. Additionally, I engage in side projects like writing on Medium and running my website, Vanirheim, where I offer esoteric readings.
The video titled "Why Support Groups Work | The Life of a Single Mom" delves into the importance of community support for single mothers. It highlights how these groups can provide emotional and practical assistance, ultimately empowering mothers to navigate their challenges effectively.
During the summer break, while many students enjoy their time off, single mom students often have to work to support their families. The education and welfare systems typically do not provide income during school holidays, which adds another layer of difficulty.
These experiences are just a few examples of the structural challenges I face as both a student and a single mother. It’s troubling that single mothers are often overlooked in discussions about educational opportunities. It’s no surprise that children of unhappy mothers struggle when their parents feel deprived of opportunities that could improve their lives.
To truly support the child, we must first uplift the mother. I find it disheartening that single student mothers are frequently marginalized and disregarded within educational discussions. It's a disservice to both them and their children, who also yearn for better prospects.
The video "Empty Nest Syndrome for Single Moms, A Man is NOT the Answer" emphasizes the need for single mothers to find strength and fulfillment within themselves, rather than relying on external sources. It reinforces the idea that personal empowerment is key to overcoming life's challenges.
In conclusion, I wish every single parent pursuing education a journey filled with success, positivity, and love. You are more resilient than you realize, and I believe in your ability to thrive. Embrace your child and dry your tears—remember, you are a true hero, deserving of pride in your accomplishments!
