Chapter 1: The Landscape of Risk in Supply Chain Management
The job market on LinkedIn reveals a significant demand for positions in Supply Chain Management (SCM) that focus on "risk" and Failure Mode Effects and Analysis (FMEA). This growing interest indicates a shift in how organizations approach risk management within their supply chains.
Many organizations are now integrating risk management frameworks such as ISO 31000 and COSO's Enterprise Risk Management Framework alongside FMEA and Strategic Cost Management practices, including Price-Risk Sharing. This evolution is supported by a variety of case studies we have developed, such as the one on Steelcase.
It is interesting to note that research conducted prior to the COVID-19 pandemic is now receiving increased attention. For instance, the case study titled "How Steelcase Put Procurement in Forefront of Risk Management" has gained traction, showcasing innovative practices in risk management. Additional case studies are currently in development.
Another noteworthy piece, "Using FMEA for Supply Chain Risk Management," has attracted over 28,000 views, emphasizing the relevance of FMEA as a tool for managing supply chain risks. We aim to update this study in 2024, and we appreciate your participation in our surveys.
Section 1.1: Understanding FMEA in Supply Chain Risk Management
FMEA plays a critical role in the realm of Supply Chain Risk Management (SCRM). It serves as a key element not only for ensuring the success of supply chains but also for the overall success of businesses. Effective management of supply chain risks can significantly be achieved through careful supplier qualification and selection.
The objective of our study was to investigate how organizations are addressing supply chain risks, particularly through the implementation of FMEA. This research took an exploratory approach, utilizing a purposeful sample to collect data.
Subsection 1.1.1: Research Methodology and Findings
Our investigation unfolded in two phases. Initially, we distributed a survey to 67 individuals identified as advocates of SCRM. Based on the insights gathered, we followed up with respondents who reported using FMEA in their supplier qualification processes.
Preliminary findings indicate that while FMEA is infrequently employed for assessing supplier risks, it is a potent tool for proactive SCRM. A subsequent case study highlighted that many of FMEA's core principles can effectively mitigate risks during supplier selection.
This research illustrates that supply chain management can mirror the processes used to identify and rectify product and process defects. Furthermore, it demonstrates that FMEA can significantly enhance risk management practices through thorough supplier assessment and selection.
Chapter 2: The Importance of Case Studies in Risk Management
The video titled "The Risk Story - Software Supply Chain Security [Interview clip]" delves into the importance of risk management in software supply chains, highlighting real-world implications and strategies for effective risk mitigation.
In summary, the integration of frameworks like FMEA into SCM not only addresses existing vulnerabilities but also paves the way for more resilient supply chains in the future.
