Chapter 1: The Struggle of a Wordsmith

As a passionate writer, my life revolves around words. My previous position as a librarian only deepened my love for language and storytelling. However, in today's marketing landscape, visuals play a crucial role.

Visuals are essential:

• Complementary color palettes (though I’m not fully convinced)
• Trendy graphics and sleek designs

This is where I falter; design is not my forte. I adore colors, yet I struggle to coordinate them effectively, and my layout skills leave much to be desired. To be honest, I can’t even draw a straight line with a ruler!

The pressure to create polished, branded marketing materials—like Instagram templates, LinkedIn banners, and visually appealing portfolio pieces—was overwhelming. I found myself stalling my business due to my inability to tackle the design aspect, and hiring a graphic designer was beyond my budget.

Then, one fateful day, I discovered Canva, and it was a game changer.

Canva is brimming with beautiful visuals and templates. From reels and banners to blog headers and email templates, it has everything you could possibly need. You can genuinely build a business using Canva—design your logo, set up a brand kit with your chosen colors and fonts, and even create and schedule all your social media content.

Some creative individuals even generate income by selling their own Canva template downloads. If you have a knack for creativity, I highly recommend considering this as a side hustle or a passive income stream—simply create your templates, upload them to platforms like Etsy or Gumroad, and you're off to the races!

I now complete all my Instagram posts for an entire month in just one afternoon. Thanks to the templates, I can update everything in one session and schedule them out (although I do wish they allowed scheduling for carousel posts).

My copywriter portfolio looks stunning, all thanks to Canva’s beautifully designed templates. There are days when I simply log in and create for the joy of it; I finally have an avenue to express my creativity, filled with color and fun, without having to start from scratch every time.

So here it is—my heartfelt tribute to Canva. They have not only rescued my creative endeavors with their fantastic graphics and design tools, but they also seem like an amazing company overall. It’s a true success story that began in Perth and is now conveniently located just around the corner from me. One day, I hope to muster the courage to knock on their door and ask for a job!
