Leaders as Symbols: Understanding the Human Behind the Role

Chapter 1: The Weight of Leadership
In our society, we often place immense importance on leaders. When examining an organization, it's common to focus on the figure at the helm to gauge its overall state. Whether the news is positive or negative, our instinct is to look to the leader for answers. This can lead to a tendency to either elevate them or criticize them harshly. Furthermore, when a leader faces challenges, it prompts us to question the integrity of the entire organization.
For instance, the recent developments involving Sam Altman and OpenAI have drawn significant public attention. Altman has long been viewed as the face of artificial intelligence, to the point where many people struggle to distinguish between him, OpenAI, and AI itself. Following the announcement of his removal from the positions of CEO and Board member, numerous questions have surfaced: Did Altman make a mistake? Is the Board acting irrationally? What implications does this hold for OpenAI? Could this signal broader issues within the AI sector?
While I cannot definitively answer these questions, one thing is clear: many individuals regard Sam Altman as a symbol. When they see his image, they envision AI, innovation, and transformation—though opinions on whether these changes are positive or negative vary widely. But at the core, who is Sam Altman? He is simply a human being, nothing more.
Ultimately, Altman does not embody the entirety of OpenAI or the field of AI itself. He is just another individual among countless others. Too often, we assign leaders a "larger-than-life" status, causing them to become symbols rather than being seen for who they truly are. This phenomenon occurs frequently.
While some individuals may achieve remarkable feats worthy of recognition, it is crucial to remember that all leaders are fundamentally human. They possess strengths and weaknesses, successes and failures. They have supporters and detractors, and their perspectives can range from insightful to perplexing. They engage in actions that deserve admiration as well as scrutiny.
These individuals are not extraordinary beings; they are human beings. They are neither supernatural nor divine. We must be cautious about the pedestals we build for others. Failing to maintain this caution can lead to various issues, such as imposing excessive pressure on leaders or, conversely, on ourselves if we are in leadership roles.
When leaders inevitably disappoint us, as all humans do, it can weigh heavily on us. Their actions can profoundly affect our lives if we are not careful. The symbols we create can wield significant power, but transforming humans into mere symbols can lead to adverse consequences.
This concept reminds me of a story about Saint Francis of Assisi. Within the Catholic Church, certain criteria must be met posthumously for someone to be considered a canonized saint. During his lifetime, Saint Francis was a transformative figure, achieving extraordinary things. However, he cautioned against premature canonization, stating, “Don’t canonize me too soon. I’m perfectly capable of fathering a child.”
Despite the greatness he accomplished, he understood that he remained a flawed human being. People were beginning to see him as a symbol, but he urged them to recognize his humanity. This serves as a valuable lesson for us: while some individuals may be remarkable, they are still human. We should exercise caution in treating anyone as a symbol.
Section 1.1: The Impact of Symbols
Symbols hold significant power in our lives, shaping our perceptions and expectations. When we elevate leaders to symbolic status, we risk overlooking their humanity and the complexities of their roles.

Section 1.2: The Dangers of Idealization
Idealizing leaders can lead to disillusionment. When they inevitably falter, the consequences can be profound, affecting both their followers and the organizations they represent.
