Managing My Night Owl Habits: A Personal Journey

Written on

Chapter 1: The Evening Calm

As the clock strikes nine, I finally find a moment to unwind. The tranquility of my home envelops me after a hectic day, with only the soft sounds of raindrops from my toddler's sound machine drifting in from the next room.

I begin to feel the day's tensions dissolve, as the cushions of my couch seem to absorb my stress, hiding it away alongside the remnants of snacks—Cheerios and graham cracker crumbs. If only they could stay there forever, just for a little while longer.

However, I am acutely aware that this peace is fleeting. Soon, my mind will be inundated with the worries of tomorrow and the nagging thoughts of what I neglected today. With a slight movement, I retrieve my phone from my pocket.

"Just 20 minutes," I tell myself.

I scroll.

And I scroll.

And I scroll.

Lost in a sea of YouTube shorts and TikToks, I dive into whatever content appears on my "For You" page. Each brief video seems to act as a time warp, whisking me five minutes further into the night.

My eyelids grow heavy, prompting me to check the time: it's midnight.

I shut my phone.

I exhale.

Another evening has slipped away, and I face an early morning in just five hours. This time could have been spent productively. I had intentions to make the most of it.

The plan was simple: relax for 20 minutes, then rise to check my college assignments and dedicate at least half an hour to writing. In total, a mere hour or two. I could have been in bed nearly an hour ago.

Yet, once again, relaxation claimed victory. It has triumphed for the past month, to be honest. There’s no optimistic twist to this tale—this struggle has persisted for three years or more. Perhaps it's part of the parenting experience or just the way my mind operates. The justifications are always present.

The responsibility to initiate change lies with me. I am aware of what needs to be done and understand that my current sleep deprivation isn't sustainable in the long run. However, there's a significant gap between knowing what actions to take and actually following through.

I find myself somewhere in that gap. As I navigate this path of self-discovery, I hope my motivation grows stronger, enabling me to transition into that next phase of putting everything into practice.
