Mastering the Art of Completing Your Personal Projects

Chapter 1: The Challenge of Personal Projects
A common issue faced by my coaching clients is the struggle to finish personal projects. Unlike those associated with work, personal projects often lack accountability. At work, you usually have a manager setting deadlines and coworkers relying on you, whereas personal endeavors often don’t have that same level of pressure.
Before embarking on any project, whether professional or personal, it is crucial to establish a well-defined goal. This can be summarized in a clear sentence that articulates what you aim to achieve and when. A historical example of this is John F. Kennedy’s declaration in 1961 that the U.S. should aim to land a man on the Moon and bring him back safely by the end of the decade. This succinct statement provided NASA with a clear direction, a specific deadline, and a shared vision.
Regardless of the technological hurdles at the time, the focus was on a defined outcome and a timeline. Therefore, before initiating your project, craft your own clarifying sentence that outlines your goal and its completion date.
A common pitfall is overthinking and excessive planning. While reflection is important, it can often serve as a barrier to action. Once you’ve established a clear goal, you only need to identify the very first step to take.
For instance, if you’re considering adding a conservatory to your home, the initial action might involve obtaining quotes to assess the financial feasibility. Spending months deliberating without understanding the costs is counterproductive.
Imagine you and your partner decide to build a conservatory. The following day, reach out to companies for estimates. You might also need to check if you require planning permission from your local government and what the necessary forms entail. Without this critical information, progress is stalled. Hence, taking logical initial steps is vital once you’ve committed to your project. Subsequent actions will naturally follow.
For example, after receiving quotes, the next logical step would be to secure financing, followed by hiring a construction team.
The same principle applies to smaller goals. If you wish to shed extra weight gained over winter, determine your target weight and a timeline for achieving it. After that, decide on your method—be it through diet, exercise, or both—and simply begin. Start by taking a walk or adjusting your eating habits. Extensive research isn’t necessary; just get started and adapt along the way.
Identifying Your Antagonist
Completing personal projects also requires recognizing an antagonist. In NASA's moon landing mission, the Soviet Union served as the competitor, fueling the urgency known as the "Space Race." While most of us may not have a direct rival, we often find the biggest opponent within ourselves.
Procrastination can be a significant barrier. We tend to default to laziness, a trait that served our ancestors well when resources were scarce but is less beneficial today. The allure of comfort—like the pull of our sofas or the temptation of fast food—can easily distract us from our goals.
You must confront your weaknesses and treat them as adversaries. Make a conscious decision to resist the temptations of comfort and indulgence. When you feel the urge to procrastinate, pause, refuse to give in, and take action toward your goal.
After defining your project, crafting a clear statement, and identifying your inner antagonists, take that first step. Whether it’s starting a diet, contacting builders, or organizing your home, initiate the first natural task. Remember, avoid the trap of over-planning; action is the key to completion.
