Npower Canada Junior Data Analyst Program Experience
Written on
Overview of the Program
In the spring of 2021, I had the chance to engage in the Npower Junior Data Analyst Program, which took place from May to August. This period was quite challenging for me as I had just completed my degree in Biological Sciences in 2020. With the job market appearing bleak, I was determined not to find myself confined to a lab conducting repetitive research. Fortunately, discovering this program sparked my interest in data science and set the groundwork for my future career.
Background and Skills
Prior to this program, I had a foundation in front-end development, having taken courses in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript during high school. My introduction to back-end development came in 2018 when I learned R as part of a quantitative biology class (Bio 315). It was around this time that I created my GitHub account. Later, I furthered my skills in Python through the CS1301 course provided by edX and Georgia Tech. I also explored various courses on Udemy, although I did not complete most of them.
Gaining Experience in the Program
As I mentioned earlier, my understanding of the data analyst role was limited, primarily consisting of my knowledge in Python and R, along with front-end development. The program introduced me to essential tools such as Excel, SQL Fundamentals for Data Science, Python for Applied Data Science and AI, as well as Microsoft Azure Fundamentals. Over the course of four months, I acquired the foundational skills necessary for a data analyst and soon after, in September 2021, I embarked on my first technical position.
First Technical Position: Customer Support
My inaugural technical role was as a Desk-side Support Consultant at Longview Systems, where I provided tier 1 technical support to Shaw users dealing with inquiries related to Wi-Fi, phone services, and retail services. My responsibilities included:
- Documenting customer issues in a ticket management system, analyzing symptoms, assessing urgency, and delivering resolutions when possible.
- Dispatching incidents to the appropriate Level 2 support when first-call resolution was not feasible and overseeing the incident through its lifecycle.
- Identifying opportunities for process improvements and collaborating with peers to enhance service delivery.
- Assisting with password resets, COMX, Retail, CBS, account unlocks, and VPN troubleshooting.
- Escalating higher-level incidents to the tier 2 support team.
- Coordinating with the desktop support team and addressing client needs by opening tickets in ServiceNow.
Post-Program Developments
Upon completing the program and transitioning to alumnus status, I was offered a Google Project Management opportunity and began exploring additional Microsoft certifications, including Data Fundamentals and AI certifications. Several colleagues from the program also found positions at Longview Systems, starting their first contracting roles. This experience formed my initial tech community, and despite initial feelings of imposter syndrome, I soon felt a sense of belonging.

Conclusion
Overall, I would rate my experience a 9 out of 10. I connected with a fantastic group of individuals, learned a variety of subjects, and formed lasting friendships. The program was conducted virtually during the pandemic, which made the tech environment feel less isolating as I had peers to support me. If you are considering applying, don’t hesitate to reach out!
