Overcoming Limiting Beliefs: My Writing Journey and Insights

Chapter 1: The Dreams That Drive Us
Have you ever imagined what it would be like to be a leading writer? The ability to share your voice across various online platforms, establish a thriving writing career, and gain recognition through published works is a dream many aspire to. Since I ventured into online writing, I've yearned to author books, become a recognized expert in my field, and have my articles published with my name attached.
However, the lure of 'quick-fix' schemes led me to start and stop repeatedly. It took me 389 days of consistent online writing to confront my limiting beliefs. I came to understand that behind every accomplished writer lies a history of incomplete drafts, creative prompts, and bold initiatives. Only when a writer sheds their inhibitions do these drafts transform into reality. Inhibitions manifest as self-imposed barriers that serve as excuses for not writing, such as lacking time, fearing failure, or feeling overwhelmed by competition.
Here are a few limiting beliefs that nearly pushed me to quit — but thankfully, I persevered!
Section 1.1: Limiting Belief #1: I'm Not Adequate
Self-doubt is a common experience for many writers. It often creeps in during moments of writer's block, leading to sleepless nights filled with anxiety over potential failure. I often questioned whether my family and friends were simply being supportive or if I was destined for failure in my writing career. Such limiting beliefs frequently held me back from even attempting to write.
The truth is that writing more does not diminish your skills. When I finally abandoned my fear of failure and the "what if" mentality, I embraced a more adventurous approach, thinking, "Let's just see what happens." I began submitting pitches to various publications, entering writing contests, and writing for multiple platforms, significantly expanding my opportunities. Remember, only readers can determine your worth as a writer — let them be the judge!
Section 1.2: Limiting Belief #2: There's No Space for Me
Initially, the idea of writing online felt daunting. Each time I discovered a new public relations strategy or a fresh approach to managing my time, I felt compelled to write about it. Yet, my internal dialogue often convinced me that I would be judged harshly for sharing my thoughts.
This "spotlight effect" misled me into believing that writing wasn't for me. I hesitated to share my pieces on platforms like LinkedIn, Medium, or Twitter.
The reality is that best-selling authors do not limit themselves to personal journals. To establish yourself as a writer, you must be willing to:
- Share your vulnerabilities and lessons learned.
- Write about topics where you possess knowledge or are close to expertise.
- Dedicate yourself to honing your craft, whether in fiction, poetry, or other genres.
- Invest effort without expecting immediate rewards.
Every successful writer started somewhere, whether it was their first piece or their 1,000th. I previously thought that I could only call myself a writer once I achieved certain milestones, such as amassing followers or publishing books. The moment I let go of that belief, I began writing with urgency, and it paid off!
Subsection 1.2.1: Limiting Belief #3: My Ideas Lack Originality
This limiting belief often surfaces as a collection of excuses:
- I don't have time to write.
- I won't be able to make a living as a writer.
- My voice isn't unique enough for success.
These thoughts often disguise themselves as barriers to writing.
In reality, no two ideas are exactly alike, just as no two snowflakes are the same. Writing begins long before you even touch a pen or keyboard. If two individuals lead completely different lives, their experiences and perspectives will inherently differ. By doubting the originality of your ideas, you're undervaluing your experiences.
Whether you face small challenges or celebrate minor victories, there's always a story to tell. When you embrace the idea that your stories are unique, you'll find the time to write and establish your voice.
Every new writer grapples with limiting beliefs, but the successful ones learn to overcome them. I've discovered ways to confront these beliefs and continue writing, ensuring that I never lose my passion for it.
