Regaining Motivation in Challenging Times: A Guide

Written on

Chapter 1: Understanding the Current Landscape

In today's world, it can be overwhelming to stay motivated. Global issues like the climate crisis, gun violence, and threats to democracy can weigh heavily on our minds. The recent overturning of Roe v. Wade, ongoing climate challenges, and daily reports of mass shootings contribute to a pervasive sense of despair. It feels as though those in power prioritize their interests above the needs of the general public.

Many in the self-improvement sector seem oblivious to the gravity of the situation, which can be disheartening for those of us who are aware of these challenges. It’s easy to feel demotivated when faced with such a mountain of problems, leading to a struggle just to get out of bed and make a difference.

If you're finding it hard to stay motivated this year, consider these strategies.

Section 1.1: Intrinsic vs. Extrinsic Motivation

Motivation can be categorized into two types: intrinsic (internal) and extrinsic (external). The self-improvement industry often leans heavily on extrinsic motivation—think of the videos, speeches, and graphics designed to inspire us from the outside. In contrast, intrinsic motivation comes from within and is more challenging to tap into, as it relies on personal drives that vary widely from person to person.

Recognizing these motivations is crucial, as they can also lead to demotivation. Intrinsic motivation tends to be deeper and more enduring, while extrinsic motivation is often fleeting. Likewise, the demotivating factors we encounter in society can lead to feelings of helplessness.

Section 1.2: Turning Demotivation into Motivation

The goals we set usually stem from dissatisfaction with some aspect of our lives. This dissatisfaction might manifest as a desire to improve our physical health or develop new skills. If a particular issue—be it personal or global—frustrates you, it can serve as a solid foundation for motivation.

If you're upset about the state of the world or your own circumstances, channel that energy into action. Such moments can clarify your intentions and reveal the person you aspire to become.

Personal Experience: A Catalyst for Change

After high school, I participated in a program that took me across Canada for nine months, living with strangers. At the time, I lacked the confidence to undertake such a venture, but my frustration with my social skills motivated me to take the leap. That anger became a catalyst for real change.

Chapter 2: The Role of Positivity in Motivation

Not everyone can convert negative feelings into productive actions. For some, it’s more effective to eliminate negativity altogether. This isn’t always easy, but it can be simpler than trying to transform negative thoughts into positive actions.

Negative thoughts can overshadow the benefits of taking action. Consider the things you've been putting off; reflect on how accomplishing those tasks could positively impact your life.

Section 2.1: Aligning Motivation with Personal Values

While this concept is closely related to intrinsic motivation, it serves as a reinforcement strategy that helps sustain motivation over time. Recognizing your core values can transform your motivation into something more profound and meaningful. When your goals align with your values, the significance of achieving them becomes clearer.

Section 2.2: Recognizing the Ripple Effect of Your Actions

Our actions often have a ripple effect, impacting others even when our goals seem self-serving. For example, my journey towards better health involves paying for a gym membership, supporting trainers and staff in the process. By pursuing our own goals, we inadvertently contribute to the well-being of others.

Understanding this interconnectedness can elevate your motivation from a conscious level to a subconscious one, creating a deeper sense of purpose.

In these challenging times, finding motivation can be difficult, but remaining optimistic and striving for change is crucial. Every action we take contributes to a larger movement, and with continued effort, positive change will come.
