Revamped Kindle 2022: A Budget-Friendly E-Reader Experience

Chapter 1: Introduction to Kindle 2022
The Kindle 2022 marks a significant improvement over Amazon's previous budget-friendly model.
Having transitioned from a MacBook Pro and a Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite to an iPad Pro paired with a Magic Keyboard, I found my tablet needs fulfilled. However, the 11-inch iPad Pro fell short when it came to reading, especially compared to the S6 Lite. While the iPad excels at displaying articles in Reeder 5 or Apple News, it doesn't offer the same ergonomic comfort for book reading.
The S6 Lite, being more compact and lighter, is easier to hold for extended periods. I also prefer the dimensions and layout of the S6 Lite's display for e-book reading. Although using the iPad Pro isn't unbearable, it lacks the comfort I sought, prompting me to search for a new solution.
As I previously mentioned, I'm deeply invested in Kindle's ecosystem, particularly its Whispersync feature, which integrates with Audible audiobooks. This is a crucial factor in my reading habits, averaging about 25-30 books annually. Recently, I've shifted towards reading more than listening and desired a more compact and comfortable device for e-book reading.
While I could detail my decision-making process favoring Kindle over alternatives like Boox or Kobo, the reality is that my extensive Kindle library and familiarity with its platform influenced my choice. The Whispersync feature allows me to seamlessly switch between my iPhone or iPad and the Kindle, picking up right where I left off.
The challenge was selecting the right Kindle model. Earlier this year, I had let go of my Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition, which was an expensive device that exceeded my needs, given that I don't require features like wireless charging or waterproofing. However, the Paperwhite's affordability made my decision difficult.
Chapter 2: Hardware and Features
Amazon recently announced an updated standard Kindle, addressing the long-standing issue of display resolution. Previously, the resolution was below 200 PPI, but the upgrade to 300 PPI, matching other Kindle models, greatly enhances its appeal. Unfortunately, this upgrade also led to price increases across the Kindle lineup.
The Kindle Paperwhite, which previously retailed around $99, now sits at $139. While the enhancements justify the price hike, the standard Kindle now costs what the Paperwhite once did. Before discussing whether the Kindle 2022 is worth the increased price, let’s explore its features and drawbacks.
Pros of the Kindle 2022
The Kindle 2022 is the smallest and lightest Kindle available, making it easy to hold for extended reading sessions. I often find myself just gripping a small corner of the device for hours. Its compact size and slim bezels create an immersive reading experience, contributing to a more manageable overall feel, ideal for reading on the go.
The display now matches the Paperwhite's 300 PPI resolution and includes a backlight. While the backlighting isn't as evenly distributed as that of the Paperwhite, it performs adequately in low-light conditions. The sharpness of the text is paramount for reading, and this Kindle excels in that regard.
Additionally, the Kindle features a USB-C port for charging, which is convenient since I already use USB-C for my iPad Pro and headphones. This makes charging quick and hassle-free.
Cons of the Kindle 2022
Every pro comes with its cons, and the hardware does have some drawbacks. I don't mind some of the features lacking compared to the Paperwhite, such as a flush display and auto-brightness adjustments. Given the nature of e-ink, the persistent white background doesn’t bother me much.
However, the device does feel somewhat cheap, with a noticeable plastic texture that lacks the premium feel of the Paperwhite's rubbery back. Although this is not a deal-breaker, it is worth mentioning.
Another downside is the absence of physical buttons, which I miss from the Kindle Oasis. While tapping the screen to turn pages is manageable, I would appreciate a return of the pressure-sensitive buttons that were featured in the Kindle Voyage.
Lastly, the plastic casing seems more prone to scratches and scuffs, which I've already noticed on my device. Nonetheless, as long as the display remains intact, it's not a major concern for me.
Pricing Overview
At a price point of $100, the Kindle 2022 remains the most affordable option within Amazon's e-reader lineup. The enhancements, such as a superior display and USB-C charging, make this entry-level model somewhat less budget-friendly than before. Although sales can bring the price down to around $75, the base Kindle previously sold for $75 brand new, sometimes dropping below $50.
For my needs, the smaller size and improved resolution of the Kindle 2022 justified the investment. While I would have preferred a lower price, the benefits of this model outweighed the additional cost when compared to the Paperwhite, which offers features that I don't find necessary.
Chapter 3: Conclusion
After nearly a year away from Kindle, I'm thrilled to be back. I've already read four novels on it, thanks to Kindle Unlimited, and the experience has been rewarding.
The titles I've enjoyed include:
- "Intercepts" by T.J. Payne
- "A Psalm for the Wild-Built" by Becky Chambers
- "Galatea" by Madeline Miller
- "Animal Farm" by George Orwell
I've taken my Kindle on various outings, from grocery runs to camping trips, and it has proven to be an excellent companion. Over the past two months, I've only needed to charge it once. The battery life, while not as long-lasting as the Oasis or Paperwhite, still offers weeks of usage, which is impressive.
I continue to use Whispersync for compatible books, but I've found myself reading more on the Kindle, likely due to having more free time as my son grows older.
At $75, I believe the Kindle 2022 is an excellent, versatile e-ink reader. While there are fancier models with additional features like page-turning buttons and waterproofing, for a straightforward reading experience anywhere, this device is hard to beat.
