# Supply Chain Innovations: Spar's New Hub, Automated Markets, and Lufthansa Cargo Upgrades
Written on
Chapter 1: Overview of Key Technology Trends
The McKinsey Technology Trends Outlook 2024 identifies 15 significant technology trends grouped into five major categories: the AI revolution, the digital future, advancements in computing and connectivity, innovative engineering, and sustainable practices. The report evaluates these trends based on various factors including innovation, interest, investment levels, and adoption rates. It utilizes data gathered from patents, research publications, news articles, search queries, and investment flows to provide insights. Notably, it introduces two emerging trends: digital trust and cybersecurity, as well as the future of robotics, emphasizing AI's pivotal role in the evolution of robotics.
The report also features a survey of 1,000 participants from 50 countries to analyze the level of enterprise technology adoption. It categorizes technologies based on their maturity, from early innovation stages to full deployment. The adoption process generally follows an S-curve, beginning with innovation and experimentation, advancing to piloting and scaling, and culminating in widespread acceptance. Technologies such as quantum computing and robotics are still emerging, facing barriers like high costs and specialized industry applications. Conversely, more established technologies like cloud and edge computing are rapidly advancing. The pace of adoption varies across different industries and regions, influenced by factors such as user trust, regulatory landscapes, and labor costs. For successful technology integration, companies must align their long-term strategies with both their internal capabilities and the external ecosystem. Those who invest in talent, explore new technologies, and rethink their business models for the future are likely to thrive.
Chapter 2: Spar's Logistics Expansion
On September 7, Spar inaugurated its newly expanded logistics center in Graz-Puntigam, Austria, following a two-year construction effort. This expansion, representing the fifth phase at the Graz site, involved an investment exceeding €50 million to cater to the increasing demand for diverse product offerings, servicing 1.4 million residents in the Styrian region and southern Burgenland. The expansion has enlarged the logistics area by 40%, adding 12,000 pallet spaces. The new facility features a depth of 10 meters and a height of 17 meters, optimizing storage capacity within the existing footprint. Spanning nearly 2,500 square meters, it can automatically accommodate 180 pallets per hour. Furthermore, 320 new ground-level picking stations were established, bringing the total to ten storage levels, plus an additional picking level. As part of its sustainability initiatives, Spar has also installed a new photovoltaic system on the roof, increasing its power capacity from 114 kWp to 700 kWp.
Chapter 3: Automated Markets in Germany
In Germany, Sunday closures are common due to a 1956 law, yet automated mini-markets, primarily operated by Tegut, are changing the landscape. These unmanned, 24/7 facilities, accessible through an app or card, have prompted some states to permit Sunday operations. Tegut has launched 40 of these outlets, providing around 950 products, mainly targeting rural areas with limited grocery access. While several states have amended their regulations to allow this, major retailers like Lidl remain opposed, preferring traditional in-person shopping experiences. These automated stores generate 30% of their weekly revenue on Sundays and are on the rise. Although privacy concerns have been raised, there have been no significant issues reported. Tegut plans to expand this model, which complements its conventional stores, and has observed older customers adapting well to the technology.
Chapter 4: Lufthansa Cargo's Modernization Efforts
Lufthansa Cargo has commenced the construction of its “LCCevo” initiative, aimed at revitalizing its central cargo hub at Frankfurt Airport by 2030. With a budget nearing 600 million euros, this project intends to transform the Lufthansa Cargo Center (LCC) into a state-of-the-art air freight facility. Operating since 1982, the LCC has been integral to global air freight operations. The modernization process will gradually enhance all core functionalities, including freight handling, storage systems, and IT infrastructure. Covering an area of 330,000 square meters, it stands as one of Europe’s largest air freight hubs.
