Chapter 1: The Beginning of Friendship
In a quaint village, a nobleman’s daughter, Amaryllis, and a peasant’s daughter, Lilia, were born on the same day. Growing up side by side, they formed a deep friendship, both radiantly beautiful like freshly picked apples.
As the girls matured, they began to attract the attention of young men, who showered them with compliments and crafted songs to celebrate their beauty. Amaryllis, with her vibrant personality, basked in the attention and charmed many suitors, while Lilia, modest and serene, drew people in with her pure heart and thoughts. The allure of their innocence became a powerful force, presenting them with a choice: to uphold their purity or to indulge in the sweet words of admirers.
Their mothers, sensing the time had come, decided it was essential for the girls to visit Baba Yaga, a wise woman who lived deep in the forest and held gatherings for those seeking guidance. Packing their belongings, the girls ventured into the dark woods.
Each mother provided her daughter with three precious items to safeguard: an apple to keep whole, a vessel that always remained full but could not be drunk from, and a ring that needed careful attention.
The path was narrow and winding, and as they traveled deeper into the forest, fear began to creep in. Suddenly, they emerged into a clearing where two handsome young men were gathered around a fire.
“Lilia, let’s keep moving,” urged Amaryllis. “We promised to stay on our path, no matter who we meet or what they offer.”
“Amaryllis,” Lilia cautioned, “we must stick to our purpose. Remember our promise?”
Despite Lilia’s warnings, they approached the fire. The young men welcomed them warmly, filling their ears with sweet flattery. Amaryllis, unable to resist, shared their purpose, while Lilia contemplated a way to steer her friend back on course.
Amaryllis, enchanted by the beauty of her apple, presented it to the young men. One of them, unable to resist, took a bite. A wave of regret washed over Amaryllis, but she quickly brushed it aside and called Lilia to continue their journey.
The next day, they arrived at a stunning lake adorned with vibrant flowers. As they quenched their thirst, a weary traveler approached, seeking sustenance.
Lilia hesitated, sensing danger. “There is plenty around to eat and drink,” she advised.
But Amaryllis, moved by compassion, offered her bitten apple. After he took a bite, he returned it to her, and then she recklessly shared from her vessel. Lilia protested, warning of their mothers’ instructions, but Amaryllis was determined to help. The traveler, after drinking, dropped the vessel, which cracked but did not shatter, allowing precious water to seep out. Unfazed, Amaryllis packed her belongings and continued.
“Didn’t you feel pity for him?” Amaryllis asked indignantly.
“I was merely cautious,” Lilia replied. “He seemed to want to use us, to take what he could and leave us behind.”
With another day gone, they pressed onward, nearing Baba Yaga’s home. All that lay ahead was an enchanting swamp, filled with distractions that could easily lead them astray.
“Stay on the path!” Lilia called, but Amaryllis was captivated by the swamp’s beauty and danced away from their route, lost in the allure of the surroundings.
Lilia, holding tightly to her bundle, pressed forward, resisting the temptation to stray. Eventually, she emerged from the swamp into a magnificent field of flowers, where a grand tower stood surrounded by an orchard.
Inside, a beautiful woman welcomed Lilia into a cozy room, lavishing her with affection. “You’ve shown great strength by keeping your mother’s gifts intact,” she praised. “Your hair symbolizes your power; the more you keep it healthy, the stronger you become.”
“Your apple represents innocence. If given a choice between a whole apple and a bitten one, which would you choose?”
“The whole one,” Lilia affirmed.
“Correct! A good man seeks a pure partner. Your vessel symbolizes the ability to maintain love within, untainted by outside influences. If it becomes dirty, you can no longer drink from it.”
Curious about the ring, Lilia asked, “What does it signify?”
“The ring is a precious gift. If kept whole, it will fit your true love perfectly. If misused, it may change, complicating your choice of partner.”
“Where is Amaryllis?” Lilia asked, concern washing over her.
“Amaryllis has chosen a different path,” the woman explained. “Her journey is one of temptation, and she must find her way back to purity on her own.”
Lilia, blessed and embraced by the woman, found herself back at her parents' home, greeted with joy and relief. Now, she was prepared for the future with her gifts intact: an apple, a vessel, and a ring.
