Chapter 1: The Enigmatic Donahue Sea Caves

The Donahue Sea Caves in Burlington, Vermont, offer a unique winter adventure, as they can only be accessed by traversing a frozen landscape. This intriguing natural formation presents an extraordinary opportunity for exploration during the colder months.

After a particularly cold spell, I decided to revisit the caves and see if the path was navigable. My previous visits had been during the prior winter, which I documented on Medium:

This year, the route was well-frozen and easy to follow.

Upon entering the caves, I found that most of the floor was still covered with water, limiting my exploration of the inner chambers. Nevertheless, the vibrant colors, icicles, and unique formations made it a worthwhile visit.

The experience is fleeting, as the caves are a popular destination for locals who enjoy winter walks. Often, families and pets bring an energetic atmosphere that disrupts the tranquility of the caves.

Historically, it was thought that wave action from the Champlain Sea, Lake Champlain’s saltier predecessor, carved these caves. This theory has evolved, and now geologists consider erosion and glacial activity as the primary forces behind their formation.

According to a discussion in the local newspaper, Seven Days, experts have different opinions on the cave's origins. University of Vermont geologist Stephen Wright suggests that water seeping through cracks in the rock dissolved the material, while naturalist Sean Beckett posits that the ancient Winooski River shaped the cave by cutting through sediment.

Despite the differing theories, the singular beauty of the Donahue Sea Caves is undeniable. They offer a stunning view, particularly in winter when the ice allows for safe access.

As I always say, although the sea is not responsible for their creation, these caves are a remarkable sight to behold.
