Navigating the Future: Freelance Writing in the Age of AI

Written on

Chapter 1: The Impact of AI on Freelance Work

I recently experienced the loss of a client on Upwork, potentially due to the rise of AI writing technologies. This article delves into the situation and reflects on the significant changes that may lie ahead for freelancers.

I had been enjoying a fruitful working relationship with this client, who compensated me hourly and allowed billing for any time spent in meetings. His company was involved in a tech project that intrigued me. Since English wasn’t his first language, I was responsible for enhancing the quality of his written communications. He would occasionally provide me with rough drafts, which I would polish, and we often collaborated during online meetings, where I took notes based on his verbal instructions.

As the months went by, Notion began testing its new AI features. I've been utilizing Notion for my writing tasks, and they recently introduced a new AI component, which, while still in its early stages, has shown promising capabilities. The concern for me is that my client also uses Notion. After weeks without any communication from him, I suspect he has turned to the AI feature for writing and editing. If the tool he already uses can now generate and refine text effectively, it’s a logical move for him to cut costs.

However, I find it somewhat discourteous that he hasn't even acknowledged my messages. It seems he is hesitant to respond definitively, possibly as he assesses the effectiveness of AI in his workflow. A simple acknowledgment of his uncertainty would have clarified my standing. For now, I’m grateful for ongoing work from my other regular clients, but it’s not quite enough to sustain my business.

Section 1.1: A Shift in the Freelance Landscape

I recently viewed a video by Tom Scott where he discussed his use of ChatGPT for coding. The results raised concerns about the direction in which AI is heading. Tom suggested that we may be on the brink of a significant transformation, reminiscent of the disruptive impact Napster had on the music industry in 1999. Just as Napster gave rise to a new era of digital music consumption, AI writing tools could render traditional writing processes obsolete.

In the same way that owning physical music albums has become outdated, once AI writing software reaches a level of proficiency comparable to today's streaming services, the question will arise: why opt for the traditional methods? While one might still engage in writing for pleasure, for practical purposes, it would be inefficient to take the longer route when faster options are available.

Section 1.2: The Future of Work and AI

Losing a client has made me reconsider my career path. I’ve been seeking new opportunities on Upwork, but to no avail. This has prompted me to explore alternative avenues, including online courses in coding, with a view to transitioning into web development. Yet, as Tom highlighted in his video, AI is rapidly advancing in coding capabilities as well. This means that even programming jobs are not immune to the influence of AI.

Graphic design is another field I’ve thought about, but recent advances in AI image generation raise concerns about job stability in that area too. The automation of delivery services and warehouse jobs by robotics further underscores the reality that nearly all professions will feel the impact of AI technologies.

Chapter 2: Universal Basic Income: A Necessary Consideration?

As discussions surrounding Universal Basic Income (UBI) become more prominent, it’s crucial to consider the potential need for such a system in light of job automation.

The conversation surrounding UBI has persisted for years, but we may now be at a critical juncture where action is required to avert societal collapse. If individuals are left without work, their options become dire—starvation, crime, or worse. However, if basic needs are met, individuals could focus on seeking available jobs or pursuing entrepreneurial ventures.

This raises an important question: at what point do we recognize that action is necessary? Where do we draw the line in the sand?
