Reinventing Business Ethics: Lessons from "Inventing Anna"

Written on

Chapter 1: The Allure and Pitfalls of Reinvention

I must confess, I joined the conversation late. Recently, I finished watching the Netflix series, "Inventing Anna." As is my habit after viewing real-life stories (with the exception of the fictional elements), I delved into information about the actual person, Anna Sorokin, who is depicted in the show.

To avoid spoiling it for anyone who hasn’t seen the series, I will simply mention that opinions are divided—some believe Anna faced the consequences she deserved, while others argue she continues to exploit a system that initially fell for her deception.

Anna was once viewed as a remarkable success story in business, but it was all a facade, even down to her name. This discussion isn’t about passing judgment on Anna or her deceit; instead, it revolves around assessing our broader business environment in America.

In today’s world, launching a business and selling goods or services internationally has never been easier. The internet has opened a Pandora's Box for entrepreneurs, offering more access than simply hanging an "open" sign on a storefront ever could.

However, this ease brings with it a myriad of challenges that both business owners and consumers confront daily—scams, dishonesty, lack of transparency, and ineffective communication.

You might encounter a scam in your email, a fraudulent transaction affecting your bank account, or even a data breach. The dark web is more ominous than your deepest fears, and even major corporations are not immune to attacks, despite having layers of security in place.

For those of us running legitimate businesses, maintaining moral integrity and credibility is an ongoing challenge, particularly amidst the rampant dishonesty that seems to plague the online marketplace.

Have you ever seen an ad for a product that seemed genuine, only to find out you were duped into buying a counterfeit? It’s an experience every honest business owner dreads.

Let me share a brief story about a friend I’ll refer to as Leo, who opened a small gym near Houston in 2019. Leo took all the right steps—he filed the necessary paperwork, secured required licenses, and marketed his business with transparency as he began to grow.

Then, the pandemic struck, and Leo faced the grim reality of having to close his gym. He attempted to offer online classes, but ultimately had to shut down completely, waiting for a chance to reopen.

That was until he discovered that another local gym was using testimonials and videos from his website to promote their services! Leo approached the owner, requesting they stop the fraudulent advertising, but after the other gym persisted, he found himself embroiled in a legal battle months later.

Leo pursued legal action. It was a lengthy and arduous process, and while he did manage to recover some funds, he felt utterly violated and exploited.

How does such a thing happen to a conscientious business owner? It occurs because of individuals like Anna, who feel entitled to fabricate identities and narratives without regard for the harm they inflict.

Reinvention should be a positive endeavor, fostering growth rather than creating harm. It should be flexible, not rigid, and while it may feel uncomfortable at times, it should never feel threatening.

Many people I coach often feel out of their depth when trying to launch their businesses. They grapple with self-doubt and second-guess their decisions. Unbeknownst to them, they are in the process of reinventing their "normal," which can feel awkward and uncertain, but this new reality should not render them feeling fraudulent.

Imposter syndrome is very real, but it predominantly affects those who possess a conscience—unlike individuals such as Anna.

So, how can one reinvent themselves without falling into the trap of fraudulence? There are four key areas to focus on for genuine reinvention:

  1. Your Passion.

Authentic reinvention is driven by what you genuinely want to become, rather than chasing a version of yourself that feels unattainable.

  2. Sustainability.

True reinvention aims for a specific goal or purpose that is realistically achievable, rather than an endless cycle of self-serving change.

  3. Practicality.

While it's possible for a physician to transition into a mechanic, or a teacher to become a dog trainer, aspiring to be a prima ballerina at age 70 or a renowned astrophysicist without proper training is unrealistic. (In Anna's case, she wasn't even close to embodying the persona she attempted to create.)

  4. Introspection.

Genuine reinvention involves a continuous evaluation of one’s progress and comfort level. I have encountered clients who are exceptional communicators but have no desire to give a TED talk or host a podcast. I've also worked with individuals who could earn much more than they currently do, yet feel content with their existing situation.

If you know the version of yourself that you are comfortable being, there's no need to prove anything to anyone else.

Reinvention can stem from various life changes, whether starting a new career, launching a business, breaking free from unhealthy habits, ending a relationship, or embracing parenthood.

People often find themselves needing to reinvent due to financial, social, environmental, or even physical challenges. Whenever we reassess our priorities or responsibilities, there may arise a necessity for reinvention.

The more we embrace the concept of reinvention, the less likely we are to feel isolated or disheartened by our circumstances. We can focus on fostering positive change, moving into new life phases, exploring different paths, and seeking fresh purposes.

I like to think we regularly reinvent our reactions to situations to enhance our personal growth. However, it’s crucial to remember that true reinvention requires introspection, clarity, honesty, and self-awareness.

We don’t reinvent to deceive others; that’s merely con artistry. We don’t reinvent to escape reality; that’s fantasy. We reinvent ourselves to evolve into a better version of who we are, not necessarily a different one.

Let that resonate.
