Unlocking Your Writing Dreams: A Guide to Prioritizing Your Passion

Written on

Chapter 1: Embracing Structure for Success

As adults, we often overlook the benefits of routines that children thrive on. While some kids resist structure, many find comfort and achievement within it. The same principle applies to adults; establishing a routine can be equally beneficial.

Remember the lockdowns of 2020? Many of us were confined to our homes, taking a break from our daily grind—unless, of course, you were among the essential workers (thank you for your service!).

During those weeks of unexpected free time, some people used it to pursue hobbies or even launch businesses—surely, there are success stories out there. Personally, I fell into a pattern of inactivity. This highlights a significant issue: without structure, time slips away unnoticed. Before you know it, hours can vanish while you’re lost in social media, leaving your aspirations unattended.

Does this resonate with you? I’m no expert, but I’ve observed that my most fulfilling days are also my most productive ones. While relaxing can be enjoyable, a day spent in idleness often leaves me feeling unaccomplished. Instead, I prefer to knock out tasks early in the day.

This concept is what William H. McRaven discusses in his book, Make Your Bed. Accomplishing small tasks, like making your bed, can create a domino effect—motivating you to tidy up, do the dishes, or even vacuum. I wholeheartedly agree; completing one task motivates me to tackle ten more.

Society promotes the idea that there's pleasure in idleness, yet wasted time feels unsatisfactory, especially when your aspirations of becoming a writer take a back seat. I relish the sense of purpose that comes from working towards my goals.

Many people settle for mundane lives focused solely on paying bills, content to spend their evenings binge-watching shows. But as dreamers, we yearn for more. To pursue the noble goal of writing, we must commit to activities that may seem unnecessary to others, such as creating a schedule to guide our efforts.

Being organized is often unfairly criticized as overly strict. While it’s unrealistic to expect life to unfold perfectly, it’s equally impractical to think you can become a writer without dedicating time and effort. Crafting a schedule is the best way to carve out that time.

For instance, here’s the schedule I devised for the upcoming weeks:

Although some view schedules as limiting, they serve as valuable guides, directing you toward your aspirations.

Key Message: A goal without a plan is merely an idea. To become a writer, it’s essential to create a structured plan to achieve that goal.

If you'd like to have access to a schedule template like this, feel free to drop a comment, and I’ll prepare a free resource for you!
