# Five Essential Traits for Thriving as a Freelancer

Written on

Chapter 1: The Freelance Lifestyle

What comes to mind when you think of being a freelancer? Many envision a whirlwind existence filled with shifting projects, pitching ideas, meeting tight deadlines, and perhaps oversleeping after a night of revelry in an exotic locale. The conventional image of freelancers tends to be disorganized, compensating for their lack of structure with sheer hustle and determination.

While this portrayal holds some truth—especially for younger freelancers without significant responsibilities—it overlooks the essential qualities needed for sustained success in this field. After more than ten years in freelancing, I’ve identified the key traits that can propel you to success and those that can lead to chaos.

Section 1.1: The Importance of Pleasantness

The ability to collaborate well with others is the most sought-after quality in the business realm. Having both worked as a freelancer and hired numerous freelancers, I can attest to the surprising number who behave like prima donnas. Some expect you to adapt to their time zone, while others refuse to engage in discussions with team members or react poorly to constructive feedback.

Simply being amiable and receptive during every interaction can significantly distinguish you from the majority. This skill doesn't come easily to everyone, so if you aspire to be a consistently positive team member, I highly recommend reading Ray Dalio's book, Principles.

Section 1.2: The Value of Promptness

When a client reaches out, your response should be swift. It may seem straightforward, but many freelancers often disengage for extended periods. I understand the desire for personal time, but freelancing isn’t a typical job where your employer purchases a fixed number of hours daily. Clients are investing in your expertise, and they need reassurance that they can rely on you.

Always reply promptly, even if it’s just to say, “I’ll check this in the morning.” This small gesture offers your client peace of mind knowing they can reach you in case of urgent matters.

Chapter 2: The Necessity of Discipline

Without a boss overseeing your work, maintaining consistent productivity falls squarely on your shoulders. While scheduling and productivity apps can assist, your mindset is crucial. It’s easy to fall into a pattern of procrastination—thinking you can take a day off today and catch up later.

Flexibility is one of the benefits of freelancing, but it must not descend into chaos. To effectively enjoy flexibility, you need a system and clear boundaries. There will be days when motivation wanes, but you must push through. If you cannot enforce discipline on yourself, you might find yourself back under someone else's thumb.

Section 2.1: The Importance of Reliability

Always follow through on your commitments, delivering what you promised when you promised it. If circumstances prevent you from meeting a deadline, communicate transparently with your client. Take full responsibility for your projects, including any setbacks.

In a freelance environment lacking traditional structures—like clocking in or in-person meetings—it's easy to adopt a lone-wolf mentality. However, this isn’t the wild west; the projects you handle could significantly impact your client's business. Where there is a lack of structure, it’s up to you to establish it and reassure your client of your commitment to their objectives.

Section 2.2: Dedication to Your Craft

Delivering quality work is sustainable only if you take pride in what you do. Freelancers, especially in fields like software development where quality may not be immediately visible, often submit subpar work. Unlike larger companies, freelance clients typically lack quality assurance teams, placing the onus on you to uphold high standards.

Over time, the deficiencies in your work will become apparent, whether through poor results or third-party evaluations. A deep respect for your craft helps you avoid this pitfall. If you currently struggle with this, reflect on what it would mean to truly value your work, and you’ll thank yourself later.

Putting it all together

I’ve made many of the mistakes outlined here during my early freelancing days, often enjoying the lifestyle a bit too much. Luckily, I didn’t pay a heavy price for my lax approach. Throughout my journey, I’ve explored a wide range of topics, including decision-making, productivity, and performance. As an additional point, I want to emphasize the importance of breadth—not exactly a trait, but crucial nonetheless. For further insight, I recommend David Epstein's book, Range.

No matter your path, never stop learning. If you're eager to delve deeper into freelancing, consider picking up my book, The Unstoppable Freelancer.
