Maximizing Your Writing: 5 AI Strategies and 3 Avoidable Uses

Chapter 1: The Allure of AI in Writing
The concept of utilizing AI for content creation has captivated many professionals. After experimenting with various tools, I've found them to be beneficial when employed wisely. However, without a strategic approach, you risk squandering your time.
For instance, consider the introductory paragraph generated by Jasper AI:
“AI is rapidly changing the way we live, work and communicate. From self-driving cars to virtual assistants, it seems like there’s no limit to what this technology can achieve. And when it comes to writing, AI is already making a significant impact. Whether you’re a blogger, journalist, or copywriter, there are numerous tools available that can help you improve your writing skills and productivity. In this article, we’ll explore some of the ways in which you can leverage AI to take your writing to the next level. So if you’re ready to enhance your craft and streamline your workflow, read on!”
While it’s a decent attempt, it lacks a personal touch. This generic introduction could easily be produced by anyone, including AI. The real reason you're reading this is to gain insights from my personal experiences on leveraging AI to enhance your writing, rather than receiving generic AI advice.
A Few Ways I Utilize AI
In my view, AI lacks true creativity; it merely rephrases existing ideas. At least for now, it cannot generate novel perspectives. Yet, AI can be a valuable tool for improving your writing. Here are some effective applications:
- Crafting Headlines and Taglines: AI excels in generating catchy email subject lines, article titles, and marketing slogans. For example, when I requested Jasper to create a headline for my online course, digitalbusiness.school, it suggested, “Tired of working a job you hate?” I found it appealing. However, the email draft it produced was unusable.
- Research Assistance: Need insights on the leading websites or social media accounts in a specific niche? AI can help. For instance, when I asked it to clarify "attribution bias," it provided a concise and informative definition.
- Editing and Proofreading: Many people turn to AI for this purpose, with Grammarly being a popular option. While it’s useful, it’s essential to review the suggestions yourself, as it may not catch every error.
- Generating Content Ideas: If you're looking for inspiration for your blog, AI can suggest various topics. Just ensure you don’t let it handle the writing entirely.
- Transcription Services: If you prefer to produce extensive content, consider dictating your thoughts and using an AI text-to-speech tool. You can then revise the text generated by AI if needed. However, this method can be quite time-consuming, so it may not always be the most efficient choice compared to writing directly.
These tasks can save you some time, enhancing your experience as a writer without dramatically changing your workflow.
Yet, writing should be enjoyable. Recently, I noticed a surge of AI-generated books flooding platforms like Amazon. What are these authors thinking? Do they underestimate readers’ intelligence? Who would want to read poorly crafted, AI-written content?
Chapter 2: The Limitations of AI
While AI is a powerful tool, it certainly isn’t a universal solution. It often amplifies human tendencies—if you're lazy, AI can enable that laziness; if you're driven, it can push you further.
There are numerous tasks where AI falls short:
- Writing Long-Form Content: From my experience, AI struggles with producing quality long-form articles. I am not a content marketer or freelance writer, and I don't fear AI taking over my job. I appreciate writing as an art form, but I've observed that AI-generated long content lacks depth and quality.
- Fact-Checking: AI has a tendency to fabricate information. Therefore, always verify any statistics, dates, or critical facts before relying on them.
- Creativity: AI lacks the ability to produce engaging or entertaining content. So far, I haven't encountered any AI-generated work that I found enjoyable or captivating.
As someone who earns a living through writing, I can confidently say I didn’t rely on AI to draft this article. This fact alone speaks volumes about the current capabilities of AI. If it could articulate my thoughts as I envision them, I would have gladly used it. But since it can't, I will continue to express my ideas through my own writing.
Ultimately, communication is at the heart of what we do as humans. We thrive on sharing our stories and ideas with one another.
